South Korean ship capsizes in USA; four crew missing, 19 rescued

The four crew members trapped inside a cargo ship that capsized near Georgia were rescued on Monday

On Monday morning, rescuers landed on the side of the Golden Ray and rappelled down the hull.

Three of the four remaining crew members who were trapped aboard a cargo ship that capsized off the Georgia coast were rescued on Monday, the US Coast Guard said. The remaining four were later rescued, all alive and in "relatively good condition", according to the Associated Press.

The South Korean sailors emerged Monday from a hole drilled through the steel-plated hull of the Golden Ray, which flipped onto its side along the Georgia coast.

Altamaha Riverkeeper, a group that works to protect water in the area from pollution, posted on Facebook that it will keep monitoring the salvage operations.

Reed said when rescue teams heard "tap backs" from the three crew members stuck inside the cargo ship throughout the night it "really motivated the team" to continue with their rescue efforts. They were together in one spot when they were extracted, Reed said.

At around 6:00 P.M. on Monday local time, the U.S. Coast Guard tweeted that ALL twenty-four crew members aboard the Golden Ray have been rescued and are in stable conditions.

Temperatures for rescue workers on the outside of the ship rose to 120 Fahrenheit (49 Celsius) and USCG Captain John Reed told reporters he believed it was even hotter inside the vessel.

The incident is being investigated, and details about why the ship overturned have not been released. Rescuers were dropped off via helicopter and drilled a small hole in the ship to communicate with the crew members, VanderWeit said.

Oil sheen spotted in the water of St. Simons Sound where the ship overturned was being soaked up by absorbent boom that acts like a string of large cotton balls, said Petty Officer Luke Clayton, a Coast Guard spokesman.

North Korea says it's willing to talk with USA , and launches projectile
South Korea's military called on the North to "immediately stop" actions that heighten tensions on the Korean peninsula. No further particulars had been promptly available but it was the hottest in a sequence of provocations.

The four South Korean sailors would often make tapping noises throughout their ordeal, which helped the coast guard determine their location in the ship.

The South Korean foreign ministry said 10 South Koreans and 13 Filipinos had been on board, along with a USA harbor pilot, when the ship began tilting over.

"All crew members are accounted for", Coast Guard Southeast wrote on Twitter.

Some witnesses say the cargo ship was passing another vessel that was coming into the port as it started heading out, and suggested that might've had something to do with causing the tip.

The Coast Guard said it was notified by a 911 call at about 2 a.m. Sunday of a capsized vessel in the sound.

Although rescue efforts have stalled, the Coast Guard remains on scene next to the boat as they try to stabilize the vessel.

The vessel is owned by Hyundai Glovis, which carries cars for automakers Hyundai and Kia as well as others.

Georgia's Department of Economic Development says the Port of Brunswick is the No. 1 port in the United States for automobile imports.
