Research By Movemeber Reveals Men's Mental Health At Work A Problem

At least five Malaysians kill themselves daily about 1,760 preventable deaths in a year

Sinn Féin's spokesperson on mental health and suicide prevention, Órlaithí Flynn said: "Suicide has a devastating impact on individuals and communities and the tragic loss of each life is a stark reminder of that".

The WHO report also said countries could make a significant dent in suicide numbers by limiting access to pesticides.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) wants countries to revise pesticide control regulations to edge out chemicals that are commonly used in suicides.

The global suicide rate in 2016 - the previous year for which data was available - stood at 10.5 per 100,000 people. But the total number of countries with strategies, at just 38, is still far too few and governments need to commit to establishing them. Kyle said that if his dad had felt empowered to open up to the people in his life, that the situation may not have escalated to suicide. "Every one of us has a role to play, whether you're a friend, parent, community member or school employee".

Dr Donna Littlewood, a Lead Researcher at the GM PSTRC, said: "We wanted to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day and asked our patient and carer group what they felt would help us to do that". Globally, it adds six out of 10 suicides are men.

However, suicide deaths by females under 25 saw a considerable rise, reaching the highest rate on record for their age group.

Millennials’ preference for Ola, Uber added to auto sector slowdown: Nirmala Sitharaman
The GDP growth rate is at five percent in one quarter, we won't compare it with earlier times. I'm not underestimating it and we are not sitting without responding to it.

According to the World Health Organization, while the majority of suicides happen in low and middle-income countries at 79%, the rate of suicide is actually highest in high-income countries that experience, on average, 11.5 suicides per 100 000 people. Almost three times as many men as women die by suicide in high-income countries, in contrast to low- and middle-income countries, where the rate is more equal.

It is also the second-leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds, according to the WHO. "Among teens aged 15-19 years, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among girls (after maternal conditions) and the third-leading cause of death in boys, after road injury and interpersonal violence".

The most common methods of suicide are hanging, pesticide self-poisoning, and firearms. "Suicide is preventable and research suggests actually asking someone if they are thinking about suicide helps to save lives". The need to create facilitated referral pathways and understand more about restricting access to means was recognised.

The day of mindfulness falls into the larger National Suicide Prevention Week, a campaign running from Sunday, Sept. 8 to Saturday, Sept. 14 to educate the public about suicide prevention and the devastating reality of suicide in America.

"The time to take action is now - Australia can not afford another decade of increasing suicide rates", she said.
