Medvedev contains demons to beat Dimitrov and reach US Open final

The Associated Press

Italian Berrettini came out all guns blazing in the second set and he managed to take a 3-2 lead over Nadal in the set.

But despite his inexperience at this level, the player Nadal will face in NY is a different Medvedev than the one in Montreal.

But the 23-year-old from Russian Federation did not go gently into the night. Nadal handed Medvedev a 6-3, 6-0 defeat in the final in Montreal. Raonic became the first Canadian man in a Grand Slam final by beating Federer in a semi-final.

Sure, the Russian has made finals in Washington, Canada, Cincinnati and now the US Open - only luminaries Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl have done that before in the Open Era in the same season - but he was crushed by Nadal 6-3, 6-0 in the final in Canada. "So many players and so many people found them before me".

Nadal, who has dropped only one set at Flushing Meadows this fortnight, chases his fourth title of the year.

Facing a hostile crowd after his third-round win over Feliciano Lopez, Medvedev dished it back, telling spectators he "won because of you", goading the jeering masses in the style of an old-school wrestling heel.

"I want to lose matches because I was a worst tennis player on the court than my opponent".

Early on at the U.S. Open, the fifth seed embraced his role as the guy everyone loves to hate.

McEnroe, speaking at his appearance for the Johnny Mac Tennis Project, said he is more concerned about calling a close match Sunday for ESPN. My opponents are going to keep playing. Through it, he invited the wrath of the crowd and a heavy penalty after showing them the finger, trolling them in his on-court interview and eventually apologising for his behavior. Berrettini had two set points at 6-4, but Nadal levelled before closing out the set with trademark solidity. The lung-busting baseline rallies were punctuated with moments of magic, showcasing the full range of strokes the players possessed.

Australian spring bushfires 'an omen' for summer season
That blaze is not threatening any homes but residents have been warned that strong winds are still making conditions volatile. An RSPCA vet will also arrive in the area on Monday to help treat injured animals.

It will be the 6ft 6in Russian's fourth successive appearance in a tournament final and seventh in total this year.

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal entered the finals of the ongoing US Open on Friday as he defeated Italy's Matteo Berrettini 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final match. He will also take advantage if Medvedev's serve, the least consistent element of his game, proves unreliable. "I didn't have any moment to just sit down and look back and say, 'Okay, I've done fantastic things'".

Nadal dismantled Medvedev in their only previous meeting, which came in the final of the Rogers Cup (aka Canadian Open) in mid-August. That is unlikely to be the scenario in NY. "He is very, very solid". In the twelfth game, Medvedev saved a set point before holding for 6-6 and the tiebreak.

"I would love to be the one to have more, yes, but you can not be all day frustrated or all day thinking about what your neighbor has better than you", the 33-year-old Spaniard said after reaching the U.S. Open final to give himself a shot at another major championship. But Medvedev, who gained infamy earlier in the tournament for his boorish on-court behavior, still needs to win three tough sets in order to take home the winner's trophy.

"I hope I can play for many more years".

If his performances at Flushing Meadows are any evidence, Nadal should see plenty more of Medvedev in the latter stages of his career. He neglected to attain the last in Wimbledon, bowing out at the semi-finals.

Nadal made light work of the big-serving South African, though, and faces another player who profited from an open draw on Sunday. I felt like it's just so tough to win a five-set match.

Soon after that, though, he hit a mediocre approach shot that allowed Medvedev to strike a down-the-line backhand passing victor for set point. No one from outside that trio has picked up any of the last 11 Grand Slams.
