Google 'stoking fear' in release of iPhone hack details, Apple says

More specifically, Apple counters Google's claim that the attacks endured for "at least two years".

Apple acknowledged the exploit, which used to be mounted in iOS 12.1.4 substitute on February 7, but additionally slammed Google for growing groundless iPhone hack effort.

"The sophisticated attack was narrowly focused, not a broad-based exploit of iPhones "en masse" as described [by Google]", an Apple statement explains.

"Regardless of the scale of the attack, we take the safety and security of all users extremely seriously", Apple concluded.

Apple takes issue with Google's suggestion that this offered "the capability to target and monitor the private activities of entire populations in real time".

The 2020 iPhone generation is already expected to bring some pretty big changes in terms of features, including 5G support, and now top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the Cupertino tech giant is actually working on more than that. The iPhone maker strenuously objects to Google's claim that the attacks operated for two years.

Tim Willis, a researcher with Project Zero team, tweeted that Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) saw only iOS exploitation on those sites "when TAG found them back in Jan 2019 (and yes, they looked for everything else as well)". Additionally, Apple claims that it was working on fixing the security loopholes before Google even contacted them.

The Apple Event that is expected to unveil new iPhones and Apple Watches this year, as well as announce the release dates for Apple's new operating systems, is set for Tuesday, September 10, this week. The company's statement makes no mention of China, where the government has been accused of widespread hacking in order to track the country's Muslim minority community.

Apple has so far avoided streaming its iPhone event on a Google platform and that is why this move raises eyebrows.

Google's post, published on August 29, said it was able to identify five separate iPhone exploit chains that worked on nearly every operating-system version from iOS 10 to iOS 12, the current iPhone software.

Google responded to the Apple's message in a statement to CNBC saying it stands by its in-depth research and its end goal was to understand security vulnerabilities. "Our product security teams around the world are constantly iterating to introduce new protections".

Following the tradition that was created past year, the company will be launching three new Apple iPhone models. Security is also a centrepiece of Apple's first credit card, the Apple Card, which launched last month. "We will continue to work with Apple and other leading companies to help keep people safe online", the spokesperson added.

Furthermore, in the past week, Google has been lambasted by the cyber-security community for only disclosing details about the coordinated campaign targeting iOS users, but not the one that targeted Android devices.
