Bugatti Chiron hits 490km/h, first hypercar to pass 300mph

Bugatti Chiron Prototype officially hit top speed of 304.77mph

On Monday, Bugatti announced a production prototype Chiron derivative surpassed the 300-mph mark as it hit a top speed of 304.773 miles per hour at the Ehra Lessien test track with Andy Wallace behind the wheel.

Although Bugatti has not yet confirmed it will build a go-faster Super Sports model as it did with the Veyron (the Chiron's predecessor), the fact this new record-setting vehicle is considered a "near-production prototype" hints that a limited run Chiron SS could be on the way. One other change is the adoption of a laser-controlled ride height to make the automatically adjustable suspension reduce the amount of drag furthermore. You might notice the body features a longer tail (250mm) than the Chiron, and the hydraulic rear wing is removed and replaced by a sleeker yet fixed item. Though it's mechanically identical to the Chiron, harnessing a quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine that produces 1,500 bhp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque, the Chiron Sport is more expensive with a £320,000 premium over a standard Chiron.

In any case, Bugatti only builds cars in left-hand-drive, so the Chiron can not be registered for regular road use in Australia.

The 304-mph run brings the top speed crown back into Bugatti's court. It might not hold it for long, as the Chiron's top speed is nearly 10% faster, but don't count the Swedes out just yet either.

Italian carmaker's Head of Exterior Design, Frank Heyl said that they faced biggest challenge to get overall package right.

Additionally unchanged is the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive system. There's a full roll cage and a safety seat for the driver, and any number of visible and invisible weight-saving measures have been deployed.

"Bugatti has once again shown what it's capable of", said Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory.

"Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark".

"We have shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world".

It may have taken some time but Bugatti has finally performed a top speed run with the Chiron, and the results are nothing short of unbelievable.
