Planned Parenthood Rejects Title X Funding

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Eureka Clinic Shouldn't Experience Cutbacks, Despite Withdrawal From Federal Funding Over Trump Administration 'Gag Rule'

Planned Parenthood said Monday it will withdraw from the federal Title X program that helps low-income people access contraception rather than comply with what it calls a new Trump administration "gag rule" that prohibits it from providing abortion referrals to those patients.

In withdrawing from Title X, Planned Parenthood has made it crystal clear that abortion is its number one priority.

"We refuse to withhold crucial information from our patients and believe they should be able to make their own decisions about what is best for their lives, health and families", Martinez told the Outpost. In Vermont, Planned Parenthood is the sole provider, serving about 10,000 women.

"Due to an unethical and risky gag rule, the Trump administration has forced Planned Parenthood grantees out of Title 10", Acting President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Alexis McGill Johnson told journalists on a conference call.

He said the Trump administration regulation 'would fundamentally compromise the relationship our patients have with us as trusted providers of this most personal and private health care.

"We could not be prouder of our members for fighting this unconscionable gag rule meant to deny women even basic information about their healthcare options", said Reverend Katherine Ragsdale, interim president of NAF. The Times added, "The move could affect more than 1.5 million low-income women who rely on Planned Parenthood for services like birth control, pregnancy tests and screening for sexually transmitted diseases". Legislatures in Maryland and MA preemptively adopted measures to opt out of Title X and provide state funding in its place if the new rule took effect.

Planned Parenthood of Utah said they provide coverage to roughly 37,000 people under Title X funding.

The announcement was the latest salvo in a long-running battle between the nationwide organization known for providing cheap health care for low-income women, including abortion, and conservatives who say more should be done to prevent taxpayer dollars from going to any groups that provide abortion services, even if that money is restricted to unrelated services. The federal agency required that Title X grantees submit a letter detailing their compliance with the new policy by the end of the day today.

The rule "does not reduce family planning funding by a single dollar, it simply directs taxpayer funding to family planning providers who stay out of the abortion business", she said in a statement. The program serves 100,000 residents in the state, with 77 percent of them seeking services at a Planned Parenthood facility in 2018. "The court's three-judge panel, with two judges appointed by President Trump, is still weighing Planned Parenthood's lawsuit to overturn the rule but has allowed the administration to begin enforcement - a sign that the administration will ultimately win on the merits".

Murphy spokeswoman Alyssa Alfano said the administration was working with the state's Planned Parenthood affiliates, the New Jersey Family Planning League and others "to assess the need of the program and how the state might step in".

New Jersey and 19 other states have challenged the rule in federal court.

"This is yet another step in the Trump administration's relentless campaign to undermine Americans' health care", said Pallone, D-6th Dist. "Make no mistake, this callous rule concocted by President Trump's ideological henchmen jeopardizes access to health care for millions across the country". Planned Parenthood could have chosen to make the investment to restructure to be compliant with federal law, or have chosen to abandon abortion altogether and focus instead on women's health.
