Man dramatically arrested following stabbing spree in Sydney's CBD

The police had earlier informed people on Twitter about an ongoing area in Sydney's Central Business District (CBD).

Australian police are investigating unconfirmed reports of an armed man in downtown Sydney, a police spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"As police made their way to the location, there were multiple reports the man had stabbed someone near the corner of King and Clarence Streets".

The body of a woman has been found inside an apartment in Sydney's CBD and detectives are working to establish if her death is linked to a nearby stabbing incident.

"Inquiries are underway after the body of a woman was found inside a unit on Clarence Street about 3.15pm", a police spokesperson said.

One woman was attacked, New South Wales police have confirmed.

NSW Ambulance has confirmed one woman was stabbed in the back, inside a hotel, and has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

"A short time later, members of the public detained the man before police attended and arrested him". "These members of the public have jumped into this situation that was extremely hostile", Wood said."They have brought this person into custody and allowed us to do our job".

'A number of members of the public physically restrained the offender, ' Superintendent Gavin Wood said.

Paul O'Shaughnessy, 37, said his brother Luke, 30, saw a man with a balaclava wielding a knife.

"I heard this man had basically come out of nowhere and started stabbing people who were having lunch".

"Everyone was just running away from where the fire brigade truck was and the next thing I saw this guy jumping over the auto".

There was fireys chasing him with axes and he went around the corner.

The man is seen standing on a vehicle at one point.

Footage shows a woman entering The Rocks Police station with her hand heavily strapped.

A number of crime scenes have been established and a number of road closures are in place.

Police hailed the bravery of onlookers who stepped in and pinned the man down with chairs and a plastic crate. "Traffic in the area is heavy, and motorists are advised to use an alternative route", they said.
