Norway mosque attack: Bruised suspect Manshaus appears in court

The suspect had been apprehended after the attack, in which shots were fired but no one was hit, with one of the people inside the mosque having overpowered him before cops arrived.

Oslo's acting chief of the police operation Rune Skjold said Sunday the investigation showed that the suspect appeared to hold "far-right" and "anti-immigrant" views.

Shortly after the attack, the body of his 17-year-old stepsister was found at a house in Baerum.

Norwegian authorities said on Sunday that the al-Noor Islamic Center suspect had "expressed hostile attitudes against immigrants" and were investigating the authenticity of reports that the suspect had announced the attack online, in a post that appeared to include references to both the Christchurch and the El Paso shooters.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Mohammad Rafiq (L), who stopped the attacker at a mosque on Saturday, are seen outside Thon Oslofjord hotel in Sandvika, Norway, August 11, 2019.

A suspected gunman was arrested Saturday after he entered an Oslo mosque waving weapons.

Norway witnessed one of the worst-ever attacks by a right-wing extremist in July 2011, when Anders Behring Breivik, who said he feared a "Muslim invasion", killed 77 people in a truck bomb blast near government offices in Oslo and a shooting spree at a Labour Party youth camp on the island of Utoya.

Following Saturday's attack the police have increased security around the celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid.

"These hours after what happened have been chaotic, unreal, a tragedy", the lawyer, Elisabeth Hagen, told Reuters. "He started to fire towards the two other men".

Unni Fries, the suspect's lawyer, declined to offer any further information and told AFP that she needed "much more time to get into the case".

Police said the suspect was waving weapons while inside the mosque but did not specify what type.

The name of the Oslo mosque is similar to the one in the New Zealand attacks.

The man had been known to police before the incident, but according to Skjold he could not be described as someone with a "criminal background". "And based on the views he's expressed online, it means we can safely say we are investigating an attempted act of terrorism".

The incident comes almost eight years after Norway's deadliest peacetime attack, when anti-Muslim neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik massacred 77 people at a camp.
