Hong Kong protests: Flights suspended, tear gas fired

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters rally at Hong Kong's airport

Pointing to an estimated average daily rate of MOP$790 million through the first 11 days of August, Bernstein analysts Vitaly Umansky, Eunice Lee and Kelsey Zhu said, "We are beginning to see a negative impact from the protests in Hong Kong which is causing some transport disruption and beginning to create a headwind to China visitation into Hong Kong (and onward visitation into Macau)".

"Our decoy officers do not take part in any unlawful activities", Tang said.

Hong Kong's Airport Authority added that there were "calls online" for a public assembly in the airport on Tuesday afternoon.

The protester also said police officers had "infiltrated the crowd" and called for an independent investigation into their practices.

Authorities have arrested over 600 people since the rallies began in June.

During a general strike on Monday, more than 100 flights were cancelled because airline and airport employees were participating in the protest.

Ms Lam warned that Hong Kong had "reached [a] risky situation" and that violence during protests would push it "down a path of no return".

It is the fourth day that thousands have gathered to protest against the actions of police, which have fired tear gas and non-lethal ammunition at close range into the public who are protesting against the extradition bill.

"They fight for Hong Kong and that's their view", he said.

Andy Lonergan set to join Liverpool on short-term contract
Tonight sees the 2019/20 Premier League season kick off as Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool welcome Daniel Farke's newly-promoted Norwich City to Anfield.

"I came out today to reject the government in Hong Kong and and the police violence", said Matthew, 22, who works in IT.

"Hong Kong's radical demonstrators have repeatedly used extremely unsafe tools to attack police officers, which already constitutes a serious violent crime, and also shows the first signs of terrorism emerging", said Yang Guang, spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council. "Hong Kong has reached an inflection point where all those who are concerned about Hong Kong's future must say "no, ' to law breakers and 'no" to those engaged in violence".

"So if you are travelling in or out of Hong Kong, you should check with your airline or the Hong Kong airport website to confirm whether there are any cancellations or delays".

It may cancel more flights Tuesday depending on the situation as some protesters remained at the arrival hall.

Most protesters had left the airport shortly after midnight, with about 50 protesters still there on Tuesday morning.

A massive traffic jam soon formed on the highway leading back to Hong Kong's city center. In a sharp escalation of rhetoric used to describe the unrest, Guang said the "radical protesters" were committing serious crimes and "starting to plant the seeds of terrorism".

The controversial extradition bill was proposed on April 3 as a response to the Hong Kong government's inability to extradite a Hong Kong man to Taiwan after he allegedly killed his girlfriend on a trip there.

The airport was the latest focus of protests that began two months ago. "I felt like I was walking around and nobody gave us information".
