Android users can log into some Google services using their fingerprint

Logging into some Google services on Android is now as easy as unlocking your phone

Goodbye passwords: Android is now FIDO2 certified FIDO2 certification is paving the way for passwordless mobile security.

This means that to access a specific site, the user will no longer need to enter the classic password. Technically, the functionality can only be used to access one Google service for now: Chrome's built-in list of your saved passwords. But unless you use a password manager (something we'd strongly recommend) or have a superb memory, remembering those passwords can get a tad hard. Now, for the first time, the company is bringing the same technology to logins on the web, starting with its password manager at password.google.com. So, it's a wealth of high-value data that could potentially allow an attacker to compromise many of a victim's accounts.

Google announced today that you can use the fingerprint sensor to sign in to some of its services when you're using Chrome for Android.

Your fingerprint is never sent to Google's servers - it is securely stored on your device, and only a cryptographic proof that you've correctly scanned it is sent to Google's servers. Note that if you don't have a fingerprint associated, it still works via screen lock. Google registers a platform-bound FIDO credential on your phone that serves to verify your identity not unlike a hardware security key.

What Google did say in its blog posts was "you will start seeing more places where local alternatives to passwords are accepted as an authentication mechanism for Google and Google Cloud services", so that gives us some hope for a password less future. You'll also need a Pixel phone. And you can test out how well this new system works by running a little test on your Android device. The company is finally making it so users will be able to use their device's hardware features to login onto their personal accounts on Google services.
