AMD Plans to Target Data Center Markets with Industry's First 7nm Processor

So, the company has said that its new 7nm Ice Lake chips won't be available until 2021.

"The 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors have set the new standard for the modern datacenter with world-record performance and a breakthrough architecture, delivering powerful real-world results for a range of workloads", said Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager, Datacenter and Embedded Solutions Business Group, AMD. This is the second generation of its server chips that are designed for high-performance operations in the cloud or in large enterprises.

AMD's latest EPYC server chip uses a new chip-making technology from their contract manufacturers that enables the chips to deliver higher performance without consuming too much power. "Its scalable compute, memory and I/O performance will expand our ability to drive innovation forward in our infrastructure and will give Google Cloud customers the flexibility to choose the best VM for their workloads". Twitter announced that, because of the power reductions that come with the new chips, it plans to reduce costs related to data center infrastructure by 25%, says CNBC. It is the first processor to be based on 7nm process and it has twice better performance than its previous generation while reducing power consumption by half. The chipmaker also said that it has won Alphabet's Google (NASDAQ:GOOG, GOOGL) unit and Twitter (NASDAQ:TWTR) as customers. Please see our rather long table below of the current 2nd gen EPYC line-up.

"We are extremely proud to continue our relationship with HPE, a foundational partner for AMD EPYC, with their latest platforms".

Fact that CEO Lisa Su of AMD said that she would change the dynamics of data center markets indicates that she is confident in technology leadership of AMD.

EPYC processor is a processor for servers.

Microsoft, Dell Technologies and VMware were already using the technology. The 2nd Gen EPYC also features faster DDR4 channels allowing memory modules of up to 3200MHz to be used. And, Intel also counts Twitter and Google among its customers. "What you can expect from us is consistency". GIGABYTE's new systems will provide customers with incredible compute, I/O and bandwidth capability - created to meet the huge demand for more compute in big data analytics, HPC and cloud computing.

AMD stock is witnessing heavy buying activities with a gain of 16% after Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

The 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processor combines leadership performance, architecture and security features to meet the most demanding challenges facing the data center. These processors set a new standard for the modern datacenter with breakthrough performance, advanced features, and embedded security protection to help defend against attacks to the CPU, applications and data.

At the launching event, several partners and customers joined AMD on stage to talk about the AMD EPYC Rome series and what it offers.
