David Berman, whose band Purple Mountains was to be one of the headliners at Raleigh's Hopscotch Music Festival in September, has died.

In a statement released on Twitter, Drag City wrote, "We couldn't be more sorry to tell you this". It was confirmed by The New York Times.

David Berman, founding member indie act Silver Jews, has passed away at age 52.

In July, Berman's latest indie band, Purple Mountains, released a 10-track eponymous debut album.

Beloved for his poetic lyrics and distinctive voice, Berman is being widely remembered and celebrated by fellow musicians and fans on social media.

Richard Leonard meets John McDonnell amid Labour row over independence vote
He said: "Richard Leonard was unable to persuade John McDonnell that he was wrong on supporting another independence referendum". They will take a view about whether they want another referendum. "The 2014 referendum was a once in a generation vote".

No cause of death was given.

Berman formed Silver Jews in 1989 with his University of Virginia classmates Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich.

Two years later, Berman reunited with Malkmus for American Water, which became known as Silver Jews' finest album.

The US poet was best known as the lead vocalist for Silver Jew and Purple Mountains. Malkmus and Nastanovich would come and go over the years as Pavement's stature grew, as did other members, with Berman the sole constant, disproving the initial assertion that the band was simply a Pavement side project. Berman embraced touring for Silver Jews' last two albums, 2005's Tanglewood Numbers and 2008's Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea (which was recorded partially in Lexington, VA, where Under the Radar is now based).

Berman had suffered from drug addiction for years and had survived several overdoses and one suicide attempt.
