Each boat had a celebrity ambassador and captain onboard, with others taking part including historian Dan Snow, England Women's footballer Fara Williams, comedian John Bishop, Olympic rower Helen Glover and CBBC presenter Katie Thistleton.

The event took place a day earlier than planned due to forecast bad weather on Friday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge couldn't keep the smiles off their faces as they - and their celebrity rivals - competed for the King's Cup trophy.

Prince George watched the regatta with his younger sister, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, from a boat with their maternal grandfather, Michael Middleton, according to People.

In the first race, William's boat came in third out of eight and Kate's came in seventh.

And in the second race, many boats - including Kate's - were disqualified for not going back and starting the race at the line.

Kate and Wills each skippered a boat in the King's Cup regatta held on the Isle of Wight.

Trump, Republican party sue over California tax return law
Trump's attorneys contend a state can only issue "procedural regulations" governing its election for president. California is scheduled to hold its presidential primary on March 3 after moving it up.

The duke and duchess hope the King's Cup regatta will become an annual event, increasing awareness of the benefits of sport, while also raising funds for their charities.

Each of these boats represent one of the Royal Highnesses' eight charities, which include Child Bereavement UK, London's Air Ambulance and Centrepoint.

Kate looked nautical arriving for the race wearing a striped Sandro top, navy L.K. Bennett pants and her Superga Cotu sneakers, before changing into her King's Cup t-shirt and shorts.

Kate and William are strong advocates for sports, and have undertaken work both in the United Kingdom and overseas to highlight the positive impact that athletics can have on young people.

William took the honours again during a visit to the German city of Heidelberg in 2017 when he was victorious in a riverboat race against his wife.

Spectators watched the race from a 800-seater grandstand, while footage was also played on screens across the town.
