Hong Kong leader describes protesters as 'rioters' after latest confrontation

Tensions Mount in Hong Kong as Protesters Call for Chief Executive Carrie Lam's Resignation

The demonstration added to an outpouring of grievances this year against the former British colony's leaders. It is customary in Chinese culture to eat the pastry during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on September 13 this year.

In recent weeks, the demonstrations have also included two smaller protests led by nativist-leaning groups against an influx of mainland Chinese into the city of 7.4 million people.

Examples include "bu che bu san" (不撤不散, no end to the protests, unless bill is withdrawn), "xiang gang ren" (香港人, Hongkongers), "yiqi cheng" (一齊撐, stand strong in solidarity).

A demonstration on Sunday in Hong Kong's Sha Tin district was peaceful for most of the day, but fights broke out when police started clearing streets after nightfall. This has to be done now to set the precedent for the future of the relationship between Hong Kong and China before too much is eroded.

Lam made the remarks after visiting injured police officers at a hospital in Tai Po on Monday morning alongside Secretary for Security John Lee Ka-chiu.

It would have allowed Hong Kong crime suspects to be transferred to the mainland, where the ruling Communist Party controls the court system.

The New Town Plaza said in a statement that it did not make a police report and that no mall employees assisted law enforcement. The Chinese central Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong declared that the "savage acts were an outright provocation and trampling of the city's rule of law".

Following the outcry, the four women told reporters they wanted to re-focus attention on to the President's policies. On Monday, he advised the president to "aim higher" during an appearance on Fox News .

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said the controversial bill "is dead", but protesters say nothing short of a full withdrawal will do and have called for officials, including Lam and Cheng, to step down.

The office has expressed "strong disapproval" of the media outlet and "firm opposition against its circulation of false information", according to the spokesperson.

Soon, more police arrived and advanced up the escalators to drive away the protesters, leaving behind a striking scene of blood and broken umbrellas.

Lam's predecessor, Leung Chun-ying chose not to run for re-election after his first term ended in 2017, following a massive protest known as the Umbrella Movement, when protesters camped out on the streets of Hong Kong's main business district in Central for almost 3 months in 2014.

"Carrie Lam has been hiding", said Yip. "This was planned. They deliberately blocked roads and disrupted public order", she said.

The protesters have also taken their campaign out of the main business and government district on Hong Kong island to other spots around the territory, including the town of Sha Tin where the protest march and clashes happened on Sunday. "Otherwise Hong Kong will be the loser and no Hong Kong person wants to see this happen again and again". "There's an underlying anxiety and fear in Hong Kong of what they're going to do". Critics say they are improperly undercutting Hong Kong businesses. "Coming out on the streets feels like a responsibility to me".

If people thought they had been treated inappropriately or unreasonably, they could file complaints to the Independent Police Complaints Council.
