NY power outage: Elevators stuck, subways stalled in blackout

Rockefeller center power outage

"More information to come", it posted on Twitter.

Widespread power outages were reported in parts of Manhattan on Saturday evening, with subway stations affected and street lights out after an apparent transformer explosion on the Upper West Side.

Additionally, the outage closed down a Jennifer Lopez concert, the second of her two-night "It's My Party" tour run in New York City.

People gathered around Rockefeller Center and Times Square wandered the streets as traffic lights, restaurants and the usually illuminated advertising screens in the area all went dark.

The New York City Fire Department said the fire started at West 64th Street and West End Avenue and affected at least 38,000 customers as of 8 p.m. Saturday.

Subway riders were walked through tunnels and led to the station at Columbus Circle, an MTA source said.

While it appears that the blackout has caused confusion and inconvenience, no injuries have been reported.

An EU diplomat involved in the discussions told Reuters: "It would only be targeting people linked to these specific illegal activities".

ConEd said on Twitter: 'We are responding to extensive outages on the Westside of Manhattan. "We will provide updates as we receive them".

Freddi Goldstein, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning in Iowa for president, said that the mayor had been briefed on the blackout and that the Office of Emergency Management was responding.

'We were stuck for about 75 minutes, ' said the 57-year-old consultant.

"New York is so scary there are so many firefighters and cops and people are screaming", one wrote.

Videos are emerging online of volunteers directing traffic.

Saturday's outage occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a NY blackout that crippled the city during a heat wave on July 13, 1977.

Shouts of celebration could be heard in parts of Manhattan as power was restored, bringing lights and air conditioners back to life.
