Massive power cut strikes Manhattan in New York - MILLIONS affected

Reports of the outage were posted on social media, including photos of the subway stations in the dark and people stranded in stifling elevators.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning for president in Iowa, said it appears the outage was the result of a mechanical problem in the electrical grid. "We're working to identify causes and keep trains moving".

The outages come 42 years to the day of an extensive blackout that affected much of the city.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) said: "We are working with Con Edison to determine the root cause of the ongoing power failure, which is affecting Midtown and the Upper West Side".

The Office of Emergency Management told PIX11 News that FDNY, NYPD, and OEM are responding to the area.

Con Edison confirmed the blackout Saturday evening, saying 42,000 customers were without power.

Gainer also hit the road to see how drivers are handling the risky traffic conditions on Manhattan's West Side Highway.

"We're getting reports of power outages in station complexes throughout Manhattan", said MTA.info.
