Arsenal poised to join Manchester United in race for defender

William Saliba

That's according to reports from RMC Sport, as Tottenham look to beat Arsenal to the teenager.

Saliba would be loaned back to Arsenal for the 2019-20 campaign and the fee for him would be paid in instalments, due to the club wanting as much money as possible to work with this summer with Unai Emery restricted to spending just £45m on signings before player sales.

Arsenal have been in talks with Saint-Etienne over the last few weeks to secure the signature of the 18-year-old centre-back ahead of the new season.

The main obstacle for Arsenal would be Champions League football, both Juve and Spurs can offer that, we cannot and if all three clubs were to meet his personal demands then lack of participation in Europe's premier competition would put us at a severe disadvantage.

Saint-Etienne officials are expected to discuss the deal over the weekend.

Arsenal had delved deep in negotiations for the €30m rated defender but Saint-Étienne were unable to accept the payment structure suggested by Arsenal.

Arsenal have had a disappointing transfer window thus far, with approaches for other top priority targets Kieran Tierney and Wilfried Zaha have also been unsuccessful.

But Spurs, who signed Tanguy Ndombele for a club record £53.8m this summer, have submitted a late bid.

Toby Alderweireld, who is into the final year of his contract, has been linked with a move away from Tottenham, with the centre-back having been linked with Manchester United and Roma.
