Acosta Resigns as Labor Secretary

While President Trump is due in Hunting Valley for a private campaign fundraiser Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta is laboring to keep his job and explain the 2008 sweetheart deal he gave politically connected Jeffrey Epstein when facing sex trafficking

Acosta also failed the broader public, in letting a wealthy man whom he forced to register as a sexual offender to be released, free to continue his crimes if he desired, if not in Florida, then anywhere else in the world.

Alexander Acosta has resigned as from his position as Donald Trump's Labor Secretary, a job he never should have had in the first place.

On Wednesday, Alex Acosta gave a dispassionate, legalistic defence of his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, more than a decade ago. "I do not think it is right and fair to this administration's Labor Department to have Epstein as the focus rather than the incredible economy that we have today", he said Friday.

"If Mr. Acosta was truly concerned with the state's case and felt he had to rescue the matter, he would have moved forward with the 53-page indictment that his own office drafted". He has always been surrounded by the rich and powerful, including President Trump, former President Bill Clinton and the UK's Prince Andrew.

In Friday's filing, however, prosecutors called Mr Epstein "unrepentant and unreformed" and said his payments to possible witnesses, along with the risk he would use his wealth to flee the country, warranted keeping him behind bars.

Still, he accompanied Acosta to announce the resignation to reporters today and he insisted-perhaps too heavily-that this was Acosta's idea.

But the negative press over the last few days, since Epstein was arrested again and Acosta has been back in the headlines for his shady dealings, has reportedly angered Trump.

Trump was chummy with Epstein in the past, and the president has been publicly accused by over 20 women of sexual assault.

His lawyers have not yet commented on the payout claims.

British police open investigation into leak of ambassador's memos
In his Twitter storm on Tuesday, Trump described the ambassador as "wacky", "a very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool". He urged the culprits: "turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences".

However, Mr Trump has said the pair fell out "12 or 15 years ago" and reiterated on Friday that he was "not a fan of Jeffrey Epstein".

Trump, who has previously described Epstein as a "terrific guy" who "likes lovely women", also attempted to distance himself from the financier, saying he was "not a fan" and that the two had a "falling out" years ago.

The deal came under scrutiny earlier this year following reporting by the Miami Herald, and Democrats en masse had called for Acosta's resignation.

"We did what we did because we wanted to see Epstein go to jail", said Acosta. Whether or not all of those people were engaged in the disgusting violation of fundamental human rights this monster was engaged in, we can't say.

Epstein's wealth and alleged potential for witness tampering were just two of the government's arguments against the bail package proposed by Epstein's attorneys on Thursday.

"We now have 12 years of knowledge and hindsight and we live in a very different world".

Epstein has pleaded not guilty to one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors.

The details of the agreement overseen by Mr Acosta were first revealed in a Miami Herald investigation earlier this year, with the newspaper saying that Epstein had been given "the deal of a lifetime". "Mr. Acosta should not be allowed to rewrite history".

"I feel power and influence obviously influenced the scales of justice", said Kirk Blouin, town manager of Palm Beach, Fla., who prior to his post served 29 years in the Palm Beach police department.
