Instagrammers asked not to enter pristine blue lake in Siberia

A picturesque Siberian lake nicknamed the "Novosibirsk Maldives" has been declared unfit for selfie-takers by a Russian power company, Siberian Generating Company (SGK), which uses the lake as an ash dump for its nearby power station.

"Walking in the ash dump is like walking on a military training ground: unsafe and undesired", the company told local media in June.

"In the last week, our ash dump of the Novosibirsk TEZ-5 has become the star of social networks", the statement said. The crisp turquoise waters provided a ideal backdrop for photo shoots, selfies, and Instagram posts. "This is because calcium salts and other metal oxides are dissolved in it. Skin contact with such water may cause an allergic reaction!"

Some users joked about the taste of the water as "chalky" or "sweet", though it was not clear if they were being serious.

It said the bottom of the ash dump is muddy, and swimmers could easily become stuck in the waters.

Despite the warning, people have continued to flock to the lake in a bid for the most Instagrammable pictures - from posing on its banks in a bikini to taking to the water on an inflatable unicorn.

The lengthy advisory, however, appears to have done little to quell the flow of visitors, marking the latest example of the lengths to which people will go for the ideal Instagram photo.

Millennials in Russian Federation are flocking to the so-called "Siberian Maldives" to strip down and snap gorgeous Instagram photos in front of the stunning turquoise waters of a woodland pond.

People are flocking to a polluted dump site in Russian Federation to take the ideal photo.

Some photo-happy visitors say they have no hesitations about returning to the artificial attraction - but plan to stay at the shore.

"The next morning, my legs turned slightly red and itched for two days", the man wrote.

"Blue gulls do not fly there, and plants to not die", the statement said.

The rash of Instagrammers flocking to the lake has promoted the Siberian Generating Company to warn that the chemicals inside the lake may cause allergic skin reactions and to avoid swimming at all costs.

It is the largest of its kind in Siberia.
