The Tampa native and former Mets standout pitcher was charged with cocaine possession and driving under the influence last month in New Jersey.

The New York Post was first to report on the criminal charges in a story published Friday.

Gooden was charged with third-degree possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The 54-year-old former All-Star was cited for third-degree possession of a controlled risky substance, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to the complaint, which states Gooden is scheduled to appear in Monmouth County Superior Court on Tuesday, July 23 at 9 a.m. He also received a ticket for driving under the influence. He missed the start of the 1987 season after testing positive for cocaine use.

After violating his drug aftercare program in 1994, Gooden was suspended for the entire 1995 baseball season.

Kevin Durant to Wear Number 7 With The Brooklyn Nets
According to ESPN senior National Basketball Association insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Durant's four-year deal with the Nets is worth $164 million.

Gooden, 54, has a lengthy arrest sheet and has battled substance abuse since his playing days.

Gooden's problems with the law date back to the Mets 1986 championship year, when he was arrested after an altercation with police.

He also did an eight-month stint in jail for a probation violation after showing up to a meeting with his probation officer while high on cocaine.

Although he won the National League's Rookie of the Year award as a 19-year-old in 1984, Gooden's best season came the following year when he led the league in wins (24), earned-run average (1.53), strikeouts, (268) complete games (16), and innings pitched (276.2). He retired in 2001 with a 194-112 record and 3.51 ERA.

If the New York Mets ship away Noah Syndergaard, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen should demand a haul in return.
