An air-traffic control "gold emergency" was declared after an issue in the control tower.

An air traffic control problem has forced London's Gatwick Airport to suspend all flights.

London Gatwick Airport temporarily suspended flight operations due to issues with the airport's Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower on Wednesday evening.

Eurocontrol clarified its statement moments later, saying that Gatwick has actually started a "recovery phase, " that is expected to take "some time".

The Guardian reported that the cancellations and delays affected flights in other European cities, including Gothenburg, Sweden; Bilbao, Spain; and Bergen, Norway. "We apologise and advise passengers to check the latest flight information with your airline or on our website".

Gatwick Airport suffered major disruption last December, when the facility was plagued by repeated drone sightings during Christmas week. Gatwick is the UK's second-busiest airport, and the eighth busiest in Europe.
