Joe Biden apologises for remarks about segregationist senators

INDEPENDENCE IA- JULY 04 Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden greets attendees during the Fourth of July parade

Her campaign said it raised $2 million in the first 24 hours after she went head-to-head with nine other candidates on June 27.

The former vice president addressed the issue directly on Saturday because it was "the first opportunity I had to do it in a fulsome way", he told reporters Sunday, explaining that he wanted to speak in SC - where blacks account for 60% of the Democratic primary electorate - and in front of "an audience that in fact would be the most likely to have been offended by what was said".

Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden have also been at odds over Mr. Biden's past positions on busing to desegregate schools.

Black voters account for about a fifth of the Democratic vote, and the SC primary in February is the first next year with a predominantly black electorate.

At the recent Democratic debate, Ms. Harris said Mr. Biden had actively worked to oppose busing and that at a certain point, "the federal government must step in".

Biden has been on the defensive since the confrontation with Harris, who criticized his opposition to federally mandated busing to integrate schools in the 1970s and his willingness to work with segregationist senators.

During a campaign stop in Sumter Saturday, Biden apologized for his comments in front of a largely African American crowd, who applauded his humility.

'People were going to take swings at him, trying to create a moment, trying to score their points, ' said Kate Bedingfield, Biden's communications director.

During a CNN interview aired Friday, Biden praised Ocasio-Cortez, calling her a "brilliant, bright" woman but questioned whether someone so far left could come out victorious in a general election matchup against President Trump.

When Joe Biden first ran for president in 1988, he was considered too liberal to win.

During an appearance Saturday at Essence Fest in New Orleans, an annual music and cultural conference that is the largest gathering of black women in the country, Harris pledged to fight the segregation that she said lingers today.

Harris, meanwhile, has since the debate described her current position on busing using similar reasoning to what Biden offered decades ago.

Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, still lags behind in fundraising totals when compared alongside other 2020 Democratic contenders. "They don't want to talk much about my time as vice president".

"We can not rewrite history about what segregationists were doing at that time on a number of issues including opposing busing".

"She can't build herself exclusively on tearing Joe Biden down", Harpootlian said.

In South Carolina, an early-voting state in the nominating contests that kick off next February, Biden delivered a speech responding to criticism by Harris about his track record on race. Segregation persists now not necessarily as a function of legislator. "That is one of my highest priorities, and we have got to deal with that".

He said he wouldn't attack rivals on their past. "But I think she's going to be giving Iowa its due".

Booker told the audience the next president should have a track record of helping African-Americans. Senator Herman Talmadge of Georgia, he added, was "one of the meanest guys I ever knew, you go down the list of all these guys" but "at least there was some civility".

"If you tear one another down, it brings the whole Democratic Party down", Catanch said.

In the speech, Biden also addressed his role as a lead author of the 1994 crime bill, noting it had overwhelming support from congressional Democrats and from national black leaders when it passed. "We have got to back whoever the nominee is, and I pray to God that's Joe".
