Cyclone Vayu likely to hit Gujarat on June 13 coastal cities brace for inundation crop damage

Centred almost 600 km south of the Saurashtra coast in Gujarat, Cyclone Vayu is likely to make a landfall in the state on Thursday, even as teams of state and National Disaster Relief Force have been drafted in all the coastal districts, officials said on Tuesday.

PANJIM: IMD Goa Observatory has issued a severe rainfall warning for the State for the next 24 hours as a cyclone is fast developing on the South-East Arabian Sea along the western coast.

Several coastal districts in the Saurashtra region were likely to witness heavy to very heavy rains, heralding pre-monsoon showers, according to MeT officials. However, the warning means that fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea till the storm subsides.

Sarkar said the severe cyclonic storm is likely to cause heavy rains and winds in the coastal districts of Saurashtra, like Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Jamangar, Porbandar, Dwarka and also Kutch.

With the warning of a heavy rainfall in parts of Gujarat, the state government has chose to deploy NDRF personnel in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch from Tuesday morning. It is likely to move north-northwestwards during the next three days (by Thursday). The storm is expected to peak on June 13 when the wind speed could reach 135 kilometres per hour (kmph).

"In the meeting with the state government authorities, all possible safety and preventive measures were duscussed, including the deployment of NDRF, SDRF and Army personnel", said Sarkar who was part of the meeting.
