Make America whine again: Trump threatens French wine with tariffs

DHS Secretary: 90 Percent of Recent Asylum-Seekers Skipped Their Hearings

The episode revealed the complicated political dynamics at play as Trump and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador tussle over who made out best in the agreement hashed out under Trump's threat of new tariffs on Mexico.

"No, I'm going to let Mexico do the announcement at the right time", he said, while insisting that the sheet of paper he pulled from the inside of his suit pocket and waved at reporters was part of the document.

"We have fully signed and documented another very important part of the Immigration and Security deal with Mexico, one that the USA has been asking about getting for many years". He said that for many years "Mexico was not being cooperative on the Border", but that now he has "full confidence" that they will "be very cooperative" going forward. "And yet we charge them very little for French wine", the president told CNBC, adding that California winemakers have complained to him about the European Union tariffs.

"There is no other thing beyond what I have just explained", he said. For a long time, for many years, people tried to get what we got in a period of a couple of days, and they couldn't get it.

"They wanted us to sign something totally different", Ebrard said.

The EU has approved two areas for negotiation - one to cut tariffs on industrial goods, the other to make it easier for companies to show products meet EU or U.S. standards.

The agreement between the two countries, announced by Trump on June 7, is the result of three days of intensive negotiations in Washington and includes the expansion of the Migrant Protection Protocols program, which sends migrants seeking asylum in the United States to Mexico while their cases are being processed.

United States signed ‘another very important part’ of immigration deal with Mexico
Bernie Sanders of Vermont, chastised Trump for using tariffs as a threat and operating a " trade policy based on tweets". The Trump administration announced on Monday that Kenneth Cuccinelli will serve as the new acting director of U.S.

His book, The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America, will be published on Tuesday. In exchange for suspending the tariffs, Mexico agreed to help the USA with illegal immigration.

"I don't think they'll do that".

Washington wants Mexico to be declared a safe third country in which asylum seekers would have to seek safe harbor instead of the United States, a demand Mexico has rejected in the past.

Trump said on Friday Mexico's government had reached a deal with the United States to avert a tariff war by pledging to take "strong measures" to contain the migration of mostly Central Americans crossing the southern US border. That demand was put on the table again by U.S. negotiators last week, but was not accepted by Mexico.

'If they bring the numbers way down, we won't have to use it.

He said the tax on those goods would increase each month the problem persisted until October, when it would cap at 25 per cent. Officials said it was based around Mexico's commitment to deploy National Guard forces throughout the country, in particular to its southern border, in order to stem the flow of northbound migrants headed toward the US. Economists, business leaders and lawmakers on both sides of the border warned of a costly trade war that would hurt both nations' economies, and Trump indefinitely suspended the tariffs on Friday as part of the deal.

Critics have said there have been no new major commitments to slow the migration of Central Americans to the United States.
