Google to buy data analytics firm Looker for $2.6 bln

Google is to expand its cloud computing services business with the $2.6 billion acquisition of a data analytics software company. It competes with Tableau Software Inc, Domo Inc and Microsoft's Power BI.

Google Cloud's BigQuery and associated data infrastructure, together with Looker's platform for innovative data solutions, will help to solve the business problems with data at an entirely different scale and value point, Bien added.

The deal is another sign of the enterprise-focused approach that Kurian is trying to bring to Google, which in the past has struggled to translate its distributed-computing skills into the real-world approaches that enterprise customers really need. Late previous year, Google replaced its head of cloud Diane Greene with longtime Oracle Corp.

That miss proved costly for Halep as Anisimova wrapped up the greatest win of her young career with her 25th victor . I like Barty, the Australian player. "That's insane that she did that, but I'm just trying to stay in the present".

"Google Cloud is being used by numerous leading organizations in the world for analytics and decision-making", Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said in a statement. "We thought it was time to rationalize a new platform for data, a single place where we could really reconstitute a single view of information and make it available in the enterprise for business purposes".

Alphabet shares were down 0.6 percent in early trading. The acquisition of Looker is expected to be completed later this year, subject to regulatory approval.

The addition of Looker to the Google Cloud ecosystem could afford users the ability to strengthen their analytics, which in turn should lead to better decision-making and improve digital execution. Reports have suggested that US antitrust regulators are planning to take a much closer look at Google's overall business in the near future, but on a conference call following the announcement of the deal Kurian downplayed any concerns with respect to Looker and potential interference from the government.
