During the show's first nine seasons, according to the New York Times, no victor had received less than $1 million.

In addition to the three remaining contestants - Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg - a number of eliminated singers also returned to perform in the finale.

Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan helped host Ryan Seacrest crown the new victor of season two of the singing competition show on Sunday (May 19). Watch reaction from family and friends in Laine's hometown after he won!

After that, it was time for the finalists to be whittled down to a final two, with Madison being sent packing and Alejandro and Laine continuing on for the crown.

Chris Long announces retirement
Long, 34, was a key member of the Philadelphia Eagles team which stunned the New England Patriots in last year's Super Bowl. If that does indeed signify an end to his career, Long will finish his 11-year career with 70 sacks in 162 games played.

Hardy's second song Sunday night was "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)."

Hardy, a Louisiana native who was dubbed the Southern heartthrob of the show performed his new single "Flame" after he was announced by host Ryan Seacrest as the champion. Dimitrius Graham also came back to sing with Adam Lambert, while Alyssa Raghu performed with Kane Brown, and Uché got his dance on with Kool & the Gang.

Should Hollywood Records choose, the show's runner-up may also be offered a recording contract.
