EBU and Madonna respond to Palestine statement during Eurovision performance

Two of Madonna's backing dancers with Israeli and Palestinian flags emblazoned on their backs Eurovision 2019

Beforehand, Madonna joined in with a few of Eurovision's trademark oddities, engaging in a somewhat awkward back-and-forth with one of the show's presenters.

During her performance at the final, Madonna's backing dancers were seen wearing Israel and Palestine flags on their backs.

An EBU spokesman declined direct comment, saying the matter was under discussion.

In a statement addressing the performance, the Palestinian Campaign For The Academic And Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) called the performance "immoral" in the face of legitimate human rights abuses.

Many took to social media to blame Brexit for the hostile reception from the rest of Europe.

The Israeli flag dominated the Eurovillage, waving in full force during the performance of Israel's musical diplomat, Kobi Marimi, who broke down in tears of joy after his performance.

"In the live broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, Hatari, the Icelandic act, briefly displayed small Palestinian banners whilst sat in the Green Room", read the statement.

Amash becomes first Republican lawmaker to call for Trump impeachment
Still, Democrats are divided about impeachment and Pelosi also said impeachment proceedings would be "divisive" for the country. In February Amash became the lone Republican to co-sponsor a resolution in the U.S.

The European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the contest, said the political display "directly contradicts the contest rules" and may have consequences. The group says the flags were confiscated because it broke Eurovision song contest guidelines barring the introduction of politics into the musical proceedings. "She clearly still thinks she's being transgressive - with all those robed, chanting figures, the gas-masks, our heroine prostrating herself like a Bride of Christ before revealing the traditional corset - but the production only achieved maximum tastelessness". Her spokesperson however has.

When Madonna took the stage at the Expo Tel Aviv in the early hours of Sunday morning, after a swirl of drama surrounding her performance, the reviews were not favorable. Her involvement was, up until this confirmation, not yet clear.

Her performance of Like a Prayer, accompanied by a monastic choir, was poorly received, with fans online accusing her of being out of tune.

A message of peace is not political.

The Tel Aviv performance ended with Madonna whispering the words "wake up", also printed on a big screen behind her, as she and Quavo collapsed backwards from the stage. It even led to Dutch spokesperson Emma Wortelboer referring to the performance when giving the votes out, as she stated she was grateful to be there, as well as for "Madonna's autotune".

The 60-year-old megastar began with an elaborate set resembling a church with choir singers wearing monks' robes.

The star sported a black cape and eyepatch during her performance of 1989 hit Like A Prayer and new single Future, featuring United States rapper Quavo.
