Deepest undersea dive reveals depths of humanity's filth

The submersible DSV Limiting Factor being recovered after its first dive to the deepest point of the Challenger Deep

Vescovo, 53, spent four hours on May 1 exploring the bottom of the trench inside his submarine, known as DSV Limiting Factor, going deeper than any other solo expedition. Previously, the deepest dive measured over 10,912 metres and was carried out by US navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard in 1960. While he saw particles of an object, he can't be certain if it was made of plastic or metal.

Over 50 years later, Canadian explorer and filmmaker (writer and director of movies such as "Avatar" and the "Titanic") James Cameron took the first solo dive and reached a depth of 35,787 feet (10,908 m)".

Lahey said the Limiting Factor "represents a quantum leap in the capabilities of a manned submersible and everyone at Triton is immensely proud to have had the privilege and opportunity to create such a remarkable craft, which was only possible by the unwavering support and vision of Victor Vescovo".

Vescovo's dive was one of five made by the team between April 28 and May 5, which included the deepest marine salvage operation ever attempted. Vescovo's sub, DSV Limiting Factor, utilizes new technology capable of multiple dives due to its a 90-millimeter-thick titanium pressure hull built to withstand the pressure of the deep.

"I think nearly exactly 12 hours, [i.e.] four hours on the bottom, which I think is the longest anyone has ever been on the bottom of the Challenger Deep".

Vescovo said, 'It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did.

On the seafloor they came across sweet wrappers and a plastic packet, simultaneously giving us a sense of the reach we have as humans, and the negative toll our influence is making on the planet.

Deep Sea Diving is one of the most outdoor adventurous actiivites that many people resort to while holidaying. Scientist now plan to test the creatures they found for the presence of micro-plastics in their anatomies.

The dive marks the fourth historic dive made by the Five Deeps Expedition following successful dives to the deepest points of the Atlantic Ocean and Southern Ocean.

Aside from gathering biological samples like rocks and sand from the bottom of the ocean, Vescovo's mission seeks to conduct sonar mapping in the unknown areas of the deep sea.
