What you need to know about the U.S. measles outbreak

That total is the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

Today the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated numbers of measles cases in the United States and through May 10, 839 measles cases have been reported in 23 states. They're spread across a lot of the US, but about half of these cases are in New York City. That pattern continued last week, with most of the 75 new cases coming from NY.

This year's count of measles cases has already surpassed 800... and it's only May.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has declared a state of emergency and ordered residents of a neighborhood in Brooklyn to get the vaccine or face a 1,000 USA dollar fine. These areas are home to the Orthodox Jewish communities that have been reporting an increasing number of cases since October.

New York City and Rockland County have each taken separate steps to contain the outbreak. According to health officials, most of the new cases were reported in New York City and its suburbs, where hundreds of cases have been reported this year.

7.5 magnitude quake rattles residents on Papua New Guinea island
On May 7, Papua New Guinea was hit by a 7.2-magnitude natural disaster which was so powerful it was felt in Australia. The reported epicentre lies within the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of regular seismic activity.

Public health officials blame the measles resurgence on the spread of misinformation about vaccines. A few years earlier, he'd founded the Children's Health Fund to bring health care to New York City's poorest areas.

Last week New York City health officials said 84 summonses had been issued for violations to people who are unvaccinated and they could be fined as per an emergency declaration that was issued in April.

To achieve herd immunity that protects those unable to get the measles vaccine, such as infants and people with compromised immune systems, 90% to 95% of the population needs to be vaccinated.

Two were in Florida, the first in Broward and the second in Pinellas.

The Florida Department of Health urges all residents to get at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, and recommends global travelers, health workers and people with weakened immune systems get an additional dose.
