Myanmar passenger jet lands safely after landing gear fails

Passengers walk away from the plane after Myanmar National Airlines flight UB103 landed without a front wheel at Mandalay International Airport

Myanmar Airlines flight UB-103 - an Embraer-190 model - touched the ground at around 9am in Mandalay, a city popular among foreign tourists.

"The pilot did a great job", said Win Khant, permanent secretary of Myanmar's Ministry of Transport and Communications, adding that the incident was being investigated.

A statement on the airline's Facebook page explained that the plane's EICAS - Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System - indicated a failure of the front landing gear to deploy.

"Then the Captain followed emergency procedures and did the fuel burn out to reduce the landing weight".

It's been a rough week for air travel in Myanmar, with a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight sliding off the runway at Yangon International Airport on Wednesday.
