Jeremy Kyle show 'should be axed'

Jeremy Kyle

The broadcaster has pulled the Jeremy Kyle Show from the air "indefinitely" following the tragedy, with episodes being pulled from their online streaming service ITV Hub.

Dymond apparently took a lie-detector test for the episode, filmed on May 2, in order to prove to Callaghan that he had not cheated on her.

Former Eastenders actress Ms Westbrook, who has lived in Greenhithe and Medway, appeared on Jeremy Kyle earlier this year to talk about her drug addiction, and accepted an offer of a 10-week rehab programme "to change her life".

Following the episode's filming, Steve Dymond and Jane Callaghan split up, and their impending marriage was called off. Callaghan said that Dymond was "quietly struggling".

The broadcaster said that it will continue to work with Kyle on other projects, but has not yet specified what those will be.

Lie detectors were a regular fixture on the programme, which often featured disputes between partners and family members.

For all that, it's vital to remember that this is ultimately an exceptionally sad story of a troubled individual who was found dead in his flat.

Carolyn McCall, ITV's CEO, announced on Wednesday: "Given the gravity of recent events we have made a decision to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show".

"Broadcasters and production companies have a responsibility for the mental health and wellbeing of participants and viewers of their programmes".

Hampshire Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file was being prepared for the coroner.

According to Sky News, Callaghan claimed that Dymond had actually convinced her of his fidelity just before they went on the show.

On Tuesday, Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright said TV firms must support participants in their shows.

After Mr Dymond's death, ITV suspended filming and took all planned episodes off the air, adding that the episode featuring Mr Dymond would never be screened.

He was originally ordered to pay almost £6,000 in compensation to two finance companies in 1997 at Poole Magistrates' Court.

May's spokesman had previously described the case as "deeply concerning".

"We are clear they must have appropriate levels of support in place".

An ITV spokeswoman said: "Prior to the show a comprehensive assessment is carried out by the guest welfare team on all potential contributors".
