CIA Joins Barr in Investigating Origins of Trump Campaign Surveillance

AG William Barr appoints top prosecutor to investigate how the Russia investigation started

President Trump on Tuesday said he was in the dark about his attorney general's appointment of a federal prosecutor to scrutinize the origins of the Justice Department's Russian Federation probe - but that he welcomed the news.

The review that Barr has commissioned is broad-based and includes working with Wray, CIA Director Gina Haspel and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, according to the person.

Durham's appointment comes just weeks after Barr told members of Congress that he was building a team to investigate spying against the Trump campaign.

The Durham inquiry is separate from an investigation by the Justice Department's Inspector General.

"You know what? I am so proud of our attorney general that he is looking into it".

Donald Trump Jr. agrees to Senate committee interview
Senators on the committee want to go over answers Trump Jr. gave the panel's staff in a 2017 interview and ask further questions. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) out of an effort for bipartisanship, Graham indicated in a May 12 Fox News interview .

"Yes, I think spying did occur", Barr repeated, adding, "but the question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated".

The Republican-led House Intelligence Committee issued in a memo in February 2018 presenting evidence that President Obama's Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department submitted the Democrat-funded - and now debunked - anti-Trump dossier to a FISA court to obtain warrants to spy on the Trump campaign.

"I think it's a great thing that he did it", Trump told reporters from the White House lawn Tuesday.

"The lead agent in charge of investigating this said he thought Trump would be destabilizing, had an insurance policy (in case Trump was elected) and then promised his lover that we will stop it", he said. That is also examining the Russian Federation probe origins and Barr expects it to be complete this month or next.

The FBI officially began its investigation of the Trump campaign on July 31, 2016, after receiving information from the Australian government about George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign adviser. He has a history of conducting special investigations under administrations of both parties. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on a voice vote in early 2018. Despite being a Trump appointee, Durham was recommended for the position by Connecticut's Democratic senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy who characterized him as having earned "immense respect as a no-nonsense, fierce and fair prosecutor". He has previously investigated law enforcement corruption, the destruction of Central Intelligence Agency videotapes and the Boston FBI office's relationship with mobsters.
