Israel reopens Gaza's border crossings

The Duke of Cambridge meets singer Netta Barzilai in Tel Aviv

Gaza officials said Sunday that Israel had agreed to ease its decadelong crippling blockade in exchange for calm.

On Friday, Israeli gunfire killed one Palestinian at a weekly demonstration at the Gaza-Israel border fence, the first escalation under the reported ceasefire.

Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza fired hundreds of rockets at Israel beginning on Saturday, after Israeli forces killed four Palestinians in two separate incidents on May 3.

The truce agreement was announced by Palestinian factions early on Monday.

Israel sees the protests as potential cover for cross-border attacks and a bid by Hamas to distract from its internal governance problems.

The sources told Xinhua that Egyptian naval vessels arrested three brothers and their colleague while they were on a fishing boat off the coast of Rafah town in the southern Gaza Strip without specifying the reason.

Gazans have held weekly rallies since March 2018, primarily to draw worldwide attention to the dire living conditions.

However, Palestinian officials severed communication with the U.S. after President Trump made a decision to move the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem past year.

But critics say it amounts to collective punishment of Gaza's two million residents.

"When the United States, prior to announcing its plan, recognises Jerusalem as the so-called "capital of Israel" and claims they are entitled to take such a sovereign decision that is in blatant violation of worldwide law and UN Security Council resolutions and pretend it has no implications on peace, it is not possible to have faith in such efforts", Maliki said.
