Electrical short circuit likely caused Notre Dame fire

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after much of it was burned on MOnday

Investigators believe an electrical short circuit was the most likely cause of the Notre-Dame fire, it has been revealed.

The official, who spoke anonymously about the ongoing investigation, said investigators still don't have the green light to work in the cathedral and search in the rubble for safety reasons.

The Jerusalem municipality projected a French flag onto the walls of the city's own Notre Dame center on Thursday in a sign of solidarity with Paris, following Monday's devastating fire at the iconic French cathedral.

Investigators aren't sure how the Notre-Dame fire started, but they suspect it resulted from an accident rather than arson or terrorism.

French President Emmanuel Macron thanked firefighters and security forces during a tribute ceremony at the presidential Elysee Palace on Thursday. Donations towards the church's reconstruction have flowed in from the private sector too.

Hundreds of millions of euros has been pledged by businessmen and philanthropists to rebuild Notre Dame.

Fire officials warned that the building remains unstable and extremely risky, including for the construction workers who rushed to secure an area above one of the rose-shaped windows and other vulnerable sections of the fire-damaged structure.

Notre-Dame's 12 million annual visitors will still be able to marvel at Europe's most visited historic building from the outside, but Monseigneur Patrick Chauvet said for the faithful something more was needed.

An association of Polish rabbis says that they are "broken hearted" over the damage inflicted by fire on Notre Dame Cathedral. "The worst has been avoided".

Police have also closed off a large part of the island which the cathedral sits on, citing "important risks" of collapse and falling objects.

Remarkably, no one was killed in the fire, which began during a Mass, after firefighters and church officials speedily evacuated those inside.

The chaplain said a team of rescuers broke the relic's protective covering and an official who had the secret code to unlock the protection finished the job. He praised the action that preserved "this extraordinary relic, this patrimony of humanity".

On Thursday, workers were seen securing the support structure above one of Notre Dame's famed rose windows with wooden planks.

Loaded with gear, they climbed hundreds of steps up the cathedral's narrow spiral staircase to the top of one of the two towers.

"I think one of the greatest contributions the Holy See can make ... will be above a technical one because we have, for example, the Vatican Museums", Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi told reporters this week. "It was from upstairs that you understood that it was really dramatic".

"We are extremely touched", he said. "It was spreading quickly".
