3 'highly experienced' climbers presumed dead after avalanche at national park

Three world-renowned climbers are missing and presumed to have died in an avalanche in the Rocky Mountains.

They were reported overdue on Wednesday.

"We can't speculate ... every mountain, every valley has its own conditions", he said.

From left: David Lama, Hansjörg Auer, and Jess Roskelley were presumed dead.

Pullan said the M16 route up Howse Peak was climbed in 1999 and never since. The men were part of The North Face's Global Athlete Team, the company said in a statement. John Roskelley joined his son on the successful Everest expedition in 2003.

"Jess Roskelley was just an all-around, American badass alpine climber with visions on doing these big climbs", Pullan said.

The area is under a "spring" avalanche forecast, according to Avalanche Canada, which means conditions and risk can vary widely throughout the day depending on on temperature, wind, solar radiation and the aspect and angle of a particular slope.

"He is a relatively reserved guy who wasn't somebody looking to play his achievements out to the media", Routen said.

Pink Moon: When And Where To Watch April Full Moon
Easter is traditionally held on the first Sunday following the first Full Moon after the Spring Equinox. Wondering how full moons get these interesting nicknames? "Sometimes we can only see a thin crescent".

The three men probably started their ascent on Tuesday, Stephen Holeczi, Parks Canada visitor safety specialist said.

Holeczi said the route was "highly technical and would not be frequented, it's not a regular route on a mountain peak".

Howse Peak, with a 3,295 metre (10,800 foot) elevation, is in the Canadian province of Alberta, in Banff National Park.

"David, Jess, and Hansjörg are valued and loved members of The North Face family and we are doing everything we can to support their families, friends and community during this hard time", the company said on its website.

Routen said the 28-year-old Lama, who is the son of a Nepali mountain guide and a nurse from Austria, was only five when Everest mountaineer Peter Habeler discovered his talents and took him under his wing.

"Building on a number of first ascents in the Alps and around the world, David realized his dream of making the first free ascent of the South-East ridge of Cerro Torre in Patagonia", it reads.
