Stranded dog found swimming 130 miles off Thailand shore rescued

The dog is rescued from the sea on April 12

Eventually, the workers chose to throw a rope around the dog's neck and use that to pull him up.

On Friday, a team of oil rig workers rescued a dog clinging to dear life on an oil rig in the Gulf of Thailand, about 137 miles from shore.

Payalaw described how the dog simply held on silently, looking up at the workers.

Workers spotted the animal's head poking up above water as the dog paddled through the ocean towards the platform.

He said the crew speculated it might have fallen off a fishing trawler, and dubbed him Boonrod, a Thai word that roughly translates as "the saved one" or "survivor".

We will have to play at our limit, 100 per cent, and not try to (just) come through somehow because then you cannot stand the power they can create here.

Photos Payalaw posted to Facebook, showing the workers tending to the soaking wet pup after he was pulled aboard.

(Vitisak Payalaw) Workers from the Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production Ltd. oil rig rescued a dog swimming 137 miles offshore in the Gulf of Thailand, April 12, 2019. After he made it onto the bars below the rig he didn't cry or bark at all. She stayed on the drilling platform for two nights while a special cage was welded and staff gave her food and water.

"When we first took him onboard he was depressed and exhausted from being in the water for a long time. She started sitting up and walking normally", he added.

Video from the rescue group Dog Smile House showed people greeting Boonrod on a dock in Hatyai in Songkhla province, southern Thailand, showering him with pats and giving him a garland.

People could be seen greeting the dog on video as she was taken off a boat and delivered into the care of the animal charity Watchdog Thailand.
