A Fordham University senior, just weeks away from graduation, died after climbing the school's clock tower and falling almost 30 feet inside the structure Sunday. "Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends - theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".

Monfries was a senior and had been studying journalism, according to the Times.

The 83-year-old granite Gothic clock tower, also described as a bell tower, rises from Keating Hall, a classroom and administrative building, The New York Times reported.

The university said authorized school officials "have sometimes given tours of the tower, in part to satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization". They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning.
