WHO Warns Measles On The Rise In 'All Regions'

Measles Why not vaccinating your kids can be deadly

New York City now has 329 cases of measles recorded since October, up from 285 when the state of emergency was declared on April 9.

After a separate group of parents in New York's Rockland County, which is facing a almost 200-strong measles outbreak, successfully had courts halt a ban on unvaccinated children in public spaces, health officials simply issued another set of orders barring anyone sick with or exposed to measles from indoor and outdoor places of public assembly. And, yes, the reality is: if people don't get their act together and seriously consider the implications of not immunising themselves and their children, we could face a situation where measles quite literally catch on.

Viral shedding refers to the process by which viruses spread, but is a term used by members of the anti-vaccination movement to propagate the myth that vaccines cause outbreaks, according to a Science-Based Medicine report.

"As a pediatrician, I know the MMR vaccine is safe and effective". Almost two-thirds of all cases have been in NY, and 85% of the latest week's cases came from the state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 555 cases from January 1 to April 11. The surge is largely due to parents in insular communities refusing or failing to vaccinate their children based on misinformation and fearmongering about vaccine safety from anti-vaccine advocates.

Even more horrifyingly, right now, we're at a tipping point, with measles numbers rising at a rate not seen in decades. At this same time past year the World Health Organization had noted 28,124 measles cases from 163 countries.

The WHO also estimates only one in 10 cases are reported, and that's just an average, which varies by region. Surpassing 2014's total would make 2019 the worst year for measles cases in the USA this century.

Trump to give ‘incredible’ Woods top medal
The victory for Woods at Augusta represented an epic comeback, almost 11 years after his last victory in a major tournament. There were questions about his ability to win a major tournament, but those have all ended following the Masters victory.

Characterizing the Health Department's mandatory vaccination orders as "unnecessary and disproportionate", the parents claimed the city was overblowing the seriousness of the outbreak.

Experts say overall vaccination rates of 90 to 95 percent are needed to provide "herd immunity", which helps keep outbreaks at bay and protect babies who are too young to be vaccinated and others who can't get the vaccine for medical reasons.

"More than 20 million lives have been saved through measles vaccination since the year 2000 alone".

In a bid to curb the outbreak, health officials are trying to track down anyone who might have come into contact with people who have measles.

Rockland officials doubled-down on their efforts Tuesday, April 16, issuing two new orders.

The plaintiffs, who filed a complaint in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Monday, argued that the roughly 300 known cases of the potentially fatal illness do not justify the city's decision to override their religious objections to the MMR vaccine, according to their lawyer. The other order cracks down on students who don't have their immunization or exemptions properly documented.

Rockland County, meanwhile, announced new measures to combat the disease, including fines of up to $2,000 a day. Since September, the outbreak has killed mostly children under 15, the Independent reported.
