Extinction Rebellion smash Shell office and superglue themselves to things

Activists stripped off in Parliament earlier this month in a previous protest

The group is demanding the Government declare a climate and ecological emergency, reduce greenhouse emissions to net zero by 2025 and create a citizen's assembly of members of the public to take charge of decisiobs and address climate change.

Today the Extinction Rebellion movement took their protests to London and across the world.

Parliament Square, Marble Arch, Waterloo Bridge and Piccadilly Circus were also targeted - with Waterloo Bridge seeing the addition of a skater's half-pipe and trees. Police arrested 85 activists that day and organizers say they expect further arrests on Monday.

The demonstration, which XR describes as non-violent civil disobedience, comes on the back of similar action in November that saw thousands of protesters occupy five bridges in central London.

The blockades continued throughout the day but as darkness fell officers moved in and began to arrest people on Waterloo Bridge in an effort to clear it.

But police said no arrests were made overnight after earlier explaining their operational response to camping "would be dependent on what if any other issues might be ongoing at the time".

The county fire department, promptly on the scene, explained what happened on a Twitter post. Officials said one nearby trailer was damaged and another one was destroyed by the flames.

"Suddenly, what Extinction Rebellion has done is actually say: 'we are doing this.' And the state is so weak through austerity that they can't stop us". "What's awesome about this is for 30 years you have just had that closing up of public space - "you can't do this, you can't do that, you've got to finish then".

Protester Olivia Evershed, 23, said: "I hope that it's really going to bring awareness about the emergency crisis that we are in, and encourage the Government to act".

The group wrote to the Theresa May on Monday outlining their demands and asking for talks.

Environmental protesters smashed the windows of oil company Shell's headquarters in London and several people have been arrested.

The order restricted protesters to the area around Marble Arch.

The busy Thames crossing was closed to traffic in both directions this morning, Transport for London (TfL) said.
