US House passes ‘net neutrality’ bill unlikely to become law

The Internet Only Needs Saving From Terrible Legislation

As House Democrats prepare to vote on legislation this week to restore the FCC's net neutrality rules, the White House is indicating that President Donald Trump would veto the bill if it reached his desk.

Net neutrality backers argue that clear rules are needed to prevent dominant internet service providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T from blocking or throttling services or websites for competitive reasons.

Supporter of Net Neutrality Lance Brown Eyes protests the FCC's recent decision to repeal the program in Los Angeles, California, November 28, 2017.

USTelecom, a trade group, said internet providers support net neutrality protections but oppose the 2015 FCC order that reclassified the internet as a utility-style service that handed the FCC sweeping authority to regulate it. Now the Save the Internet Act of 2019 will go to the Republican-controlled Senate, where it's likely to be voted down along party lines.

Net neutrality is the notion that internet service providers should not favor certain types of internet content by speeding it up or slowing other content down.

Sánchez had 33 homers and was an All-Star in 2017 but hit just 18 in an injury slowed 2018, when he was in a season-long slump. Mullins scored on a Little League homer after a throwing error from second baseman Jurickson Profar in the second.

The Senate passed the Congressional Act (CRA) in May 2018 to restore net neutrality rules, which is "an obscure legislative tool" introduced by Sen.

"Last year, the FCC returned to the light-touch regulatory scheme that enabled the internet to develop and thrive for almost two decades by promoting the internet freedom and encouraging network investment", the White House's statement read.

The House bill faces much tougher sledding from here on in, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R. -Ky., earlier this week pronounced the bill "dead on arrival" in the Senate, and indicated it won't receive a vote.

Representative Mike Doyle, a Democrat, said Wednesday that after repealing net neutrality protections the FCC had replaced them with "nothing, nada, zip, crickets".

It's not surprising that Trump is expected to veto the Democrat-led net neutrality initiative, but Monday's statement is one of the first direct comments from the White House on the legislation that is expected to easily pass through the House of Representatives on Tuesday. So even getting the bill to the Senate floor for debate and vote is a long shot, many expect.
