World’s largest Tyrannosaurus found in Canada

When the fossils were discovered, the scientists wanted to celebrate with a toast.

"This is the rex of rexes", said Scott Persons, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences. Given the dinosaur's sheer size and encasement in cement-like sandstone, however, it took more than two decades to fully excavate and analyze the bones. Researchers estimated Sue weighed about 800 pounds less than Scotty.

Back in the 1990s, it took almost a decade for paleontologists in Canada to extricate the massive Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as "Scotty" from its solid sandstone casing.

"Scotty is the oldest T-rex known", Dr Persons said.

"By Tyrannosaurus standards, it had an unusually long life".

The Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs of all time. For instance, it likely reached its 30th birthday, making it the longest-lived T. rex on record, according to a bone analysis by study co-researcher Gregory Erickson, a professor of anatomy and vertebrate paleobiology at Florida State University.

The mightiest Tyrannosaurus rex on record is a behemoth named Scotty, who - during its lifetime on Earth about 65 million years ago - weighed a honking 19,555 lbs.

The dinosaur fossils also tell paleontologists that, "all the other dinosaurs that we know of are probably of a size range that's significantly larger than what we now know of".

Kobe takes a stance on MJ vs. LeBron...kind of
Larry Bird (4 per cent), Wilt Chamberlain (3.5 per cent) and Shaquille O'Neal (2.7 per cent) were the players in between. James recently passed Jordan on the NBA's all-time scoring list in early March.

Why it matters: "The find suggests that large predatory dinosaurs probably got older and bigger than paleontologists would have surmised based on now available fossils".

In order to determine Scotty's size and weight, the paleontologists measured the size of the animal's femur, which is a tried-and-true litmus test for how much weight that bone can support.

It had suffered a number of broken bones, ribs and tailbones, and an infected jaw, possibly in battles with others of its kind.

Researchers first unearthed the formidable T. rex's remains in 1991, Michael Greshko reports for National Geographic.

Digging out the bones of the colossal T. rex was "a huge endeavor", Persons said.

It seems that this specimen has been nicknamed "Scotty", it's believed to have lived to the ripe old age of 28.

They added that the "relative scarcity of other equally large and mature T. rex specimens" suggests that these beasts tended to die before they passed the 8.8-ton (8 metric tons) threshold.

But Scotty has other claims to fame.
