Whoops? British Airways flight mistakenly lands in Scotland instead of Germany

A British Airways plane

Passengers on board the service only realised they were at the wrong destination after the plane landed and a "welcome to Edinburgh" announcement was made.

The 525-mile mistake happened Monday, after an incorrect flight plan was filed, changing the flight path of the London, England flight from Düsseldorf, Germany - where it was originally scheduled to land - to Edinburgh, Scotland.

"One, @sontrantuan, said: "@British_Airways can you please explain how can my morning flight taking off from LCY to Dusseldorf land in Edinburgh?

The flight was operated by German leasing company WDL Aviation on behalf of the British Airways subsidiary airline BA CityFlyer.

A British Airways spokesperson confirmed to Euronews the flight route to Edinburgh had been approved by air traffic controllers based on the flight plan issued by WDL.

"We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually", British Airways' statement said.

Edinburgh Airport said the landing was a "surprise".

She said the flight crew was apologetic when the mistake was discovered.

Jeremy Richman , 49, of Newtown, was found dead at the Edmond Town Hall by ambulance crews who were called to the scene. Avielle Richman was one of the 20 first-grade students and six educators killed by Adam Lanza in December 2012.

"There is an estimated departure time of 10:30 from Edinburgh to make way to Dusseldorf".

Another passenger, Sophie Cooke, told the BBC that the wait in Edinburgh "became very frustrating". "The toilets were blocked and they ran out of snacks", she said.

WDL aviation said it was trying to determine the cause of the "obviously unfortunate mix-up".

Customers on a flight from London to Dusseldorf were left confused when their plane landed in Edinburgh by accident. "It was also really stuffy", said Ms Cook.

'At no time has the safety of passengers been compromised.

Another passenger, Son Tran, tweeted to BA: "While an interesting concept, I don't think anyone onboard has signed up for this mystery travel lottery".

The flight has since been "redirected" to Düsseldorf, according to information obtained by the BBC, but there is no information as to how many passengers were affected.

He went on to say he believed the problem was an "honest mistake" because all of the crew believed they were on a flight to Edinburgh from the start.
