Petition to revoke Article 50 has 'highest recorded signing rate'

Petition calling for Brexit reversal crashes UK parliament website

A surge of signatures came on Wednesday evening, after Prime Minister Theresa May made a defiant televised speech at her 10 Downing Street residence blaming lawmakers for the Brexit impasse, pledging to deliver Brexit and telling voters "I am on your side".

"We know that the Petitions site is experiencing problems due to the number of people using the site", said a House of Commons spokesman.

Supporters wrote on Twitter that the petition showed the strength of feeling against May's strategy while backers of Brexit said it needed to attract more signatures than the 17.4 million people who voted to leave the European Union three years ago before anyone should take any notice.

The Petitions Committee said almost 2,000 signatures were being completed every minute over Thursday lunchtime, crashing the website because of the unprecedented number of visitors. "Thanks for bearing with us".

"We will be pushing for the House of Commons to support a referendum on remaining in the European Union, others will put forward their own positions".

The petition was started last month by Margaret Anne Georgiadou, who said via Twitter a week ago, "I simply want a large number to slap in the government's face".

It is now heading towards 700,000 signatures, with more than 40,000 people signing it in the past hour.

"What matters is that we recognise that Brexit is the decision of the British people and we need to deliver on that", she told reporters.

Alongside the link, Grant wrote: "I've signed". "This morning I was a bot with 15 followers that reposted poo and wee jokes out of an IRC [Internet Relay Chat] channel".

With a nod to its heritage, the bot refers to the petition's signatories as "mofos".

In December last year, the European Court of Justice had ruled that the United Kingdom can unilaterally revoke Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union - the formal mechanism which the United Kingdom had invoked after the 2016 referendum triggering the two-year timeline for its exit by March 29. But if parliament can not agree on a way forward then we'll seek to revoke Article 50.

In response to that earlier signature drive, the House of Commons' Petitions Committee held a debate on March 11.

May set the Brexit timeline in motion in March of 2017, when she officially invoked Article 50. She called on British MPs to accept the deal, saying it would be wrong to participate in the European elections.

If it rejects the deal and takes the shorter extension, it can decide whether to seek a much longer delay and vote in the European elections.
