Social media platforms removing NZ shooting content

Facebook and YouTube rush to remove New Zealand shooting footage

The @brentontarrant Twitter account was suspended not long after the shooting on Friday, as was the brenton.tarrant.9 Facebook page.

YouTube also tweeted a statement soon after the news broke.

People who wanted to spread the material had raced to action, rapidly repackaging and distributing the video across many apps and websites within minutes.

In response, YouTube said it was "working vigilantly to remove any violent footage".

Videos and posts that glorify violence are against Facebook's rules, but Facebook has drawn criticism for responding slowly to such items, including video of a slaying in Cleveland and a live-streamed killing of a baby in Thailand. Authorities have charged a 28-year-old man in the attack and took others into custody.

The hours it took to take the violent video and manifesto down are "another major black eye" for social media platforms, said Dan Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities.

The livestream of the mass shooting, which left 49 dead, lasted for 17 minutes. "I think this will add to all the calls around the world for more effective regulation of social media platforms".

At least some expect Facebook to suffer consequences.

A Twitter representative said the social media company was "deeply saddened" by the shootings.

Shares of Facebook closed down 2.5 per cent on Friday.

"All content praising, supporting and representing the attack and the perpetrator (s) should be removed from our platform", Facebook instructed content moderators in India, according to an email seen by Reuters.

Users intent on sharing the violent video took several approaches ― doing so at times with an nearly military precision. Reuters was unable to confirm the authenticity of the footage. Others shared shorter sections or screenshots from the gunman's livestream.

In August a year ago, a shooting at a Madden NFL 19 video-game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, was captured on live video.

YouTube, however, later pulled down the video.

It also was using audio technology to detect Christchurch broadcast footage, in which gunshots could be heard and music played in the attacker's vehicle, according to a copy reviewed by Reuters. "We stand here and condemn, absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist", Morrison said.

And Twitter said it removed an account that was said to be linked to the suspect.

Alex Zhukov, founder and chief technology officer of LIVE4 developer VideoGorillas, said the LIVE4 services transmitted footage directly to Facebook and his company did not have the ability to review it first. "I don't care about your profits", Booker, who is running for president, said at a campaign event in New Hampshire. "We will do whatever is humanly possible for it to never happen again".

Facebook has said it uses a combination of technology tools along with its own monitors and community reports to take down inappropriate content.
