President declared the end of HIV/Aids in Sight in Nigeria

Who has the lowest regional AIDS prevalence rate in Nigeria?

Nigeria has made good progress in scaling up HIV treatment and prevention services in recent years.

"Now that we have data that will help us target for impact, I urge all us not to relent in this fight, but to increase the momentum in a concerted effort to end the epidemic ahead of 2030. Let us, therefore, work collectively and push for the last mile", he said.

The Nigeria aids indicator and impact survey is the largest single one ever done in the world.

"I commend the Government of Nigeria and its partners for conducting this ambitious survey, which provides us with a much better understanding of the country's HIV epidemic", said Mr Sidibé.

The survey, which indicated that South-south geopolitical zone was affected most by HIV, indicated that females make up the majority of the persons living with HIV, in all geopolitical zones with the exception of the North-West, where the trend is the reverse.

NAIIS directly measured HIV prevalence and viral load suppression, allowing Nigeria to focus on providing services to the areas with the greatest need to control the HIV epidemic. Significant efforts have been made in recent years to stop new HIV infections among children.

According to him, this is an improvement to what was obtained in 2014, when the country was estimated to have 3.1 million people living with the virus in the country. It also accounts for the second highest HIV and Aids burden in the world after South Africa.

Minister of Health, Professor Isaac F. Adewole, said the survey findings provide Nigeria with an accurate national HIV prevalence measure of 1.4%. Buhari said his government, since assumption of office, has paid particular and deliberate attention to careful planning as a way of implementing effective policies and achieving sustained change. "We know we can support HIV-positive mothers, hence ensuring the next generation is free from HIV", he said.

The President noted that a lot of people are being infected with the virus and over a million don't have access to the treatment and care.

The new data are more accurate as they are based on an expanded surveillance system and a revised and enhanced methodology.

According to a report in Premium Times, about 5.5 per cent of the people living with HIV in Nigeria hail from Akwa Ibom State.

Dr Sani Aliyu, the Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), said that the generated survey would be taken to state governors who would be advised to latch on it to curb the HIV/AIDS epidemic in their states.
