New Zealand shooting suspect Brenton Tarrant charged with murder in Christchurch court

"If Jacinda Ardern moves as quickly as [former Australian prime minister] John Howard did [when he banned guns following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre], and she does it in 12 days, the probability is that she will be able to do what she wants to do", Alpers told the Guardian.

"At just that moment, there was one young guy who usually takes care of the mosque and helps with parking and other stuff, so (the man) saw an opportunity and he pounced over to him and grabbed his gun". People's lives have been changed forever.

According to New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush, the shooter had "category-A" license.

"I can tell you right now, our gun laws will change", Ardern said.

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old white supremacist obsessed with the Crusades, toured the Continent and came to Britain to stay for up to a fortnight in 2017.

A man and a woman were held in custody while police investigated their involvement, if any, in the two shooting attacks.

At least 49 people were killed in mass shootings at two mosques during midday prayers on Friday and dozens more were wounded, some critically.

Facebook said it had deleted the gunman's accounts "shortly after the livestream commenced" after being alerted by police.

Two other people were in custody and police said they were seeking to understand whether they were involved in any way.

They are all Australian citizens, but not in any watch list of New Zealand or Australia.

Ardern's office said the suspect sent the "manifesto" by email to a generic address for the prime minister, the opposition leader, the speaker of the parliament and around 70 media outlets just minutes before the attack.

An Afghan man, thought to be in his 60s or 70s, died after he reportedly ran into the line of fire to save fellow worshippers at the Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch.

Ardern further differentiated herself from Trump's conduct following attacks on minority communities when she was asked whether she agreed with the president's assessment, shared on Friday, that white supremacy is not a growing global problem.

"Many of you may have seen the footage of the arrests, and I can only describe it as an act of bravery on behalf of all New Zealanders, and an act that shows very little regard for their own personal safety", she said.

"I can't even go to the mosque now because I am scared of that happening again", the 16-year-old told New Zealand television. Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country that has had low levels of gun violence.

Aziz said: "He gets into his auto and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window".

Business Standard reports that Tarrant allegedly used "two semi-automatic rifles, two shotguns and a lever-action weapon".

He acknowledged the frustration being felt by family members of the victims, who were desperate to bury their loved ones.

Mr Bainimarama also said his government will be working closely with authorities in New Zealand to monitor the welfare of Fijians in Christchurch.
