Pasir Gudang pollution crisis: No need to declare emergency - PM

German school in Turkey reopened after closure by authorities

Over 500 people, many of them school pupils, have received medical treatment after inhaling the fumes, with over 160 admitted to hospital, according to official news agency Bernama. While investigations into the incident are proceeding, the authorities arrested three men for dumping toxic waste in the water.

The suspects are reported to face five years jail time for breaking environmental protection laws.

Hazardous fumes spread across Johor in the country's south last week after a truck was believed to have dumped the waste, causing symptoms including nausea and vomiting.

It was unclear what type of poisonous gas had been emitted near the industrial town of Pasir Gudang. After denying the death of a student, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad urged citizens to take preventative measures such as using masks.

Students and teachers in seven schools in Pasir Gudang fainted or had breathing difficulties as the chemicals in Sungai Kim Kim flowed downstream.

And I think that's a big part of the reason the success has been on such a big ascent over the last few years", he said. The Andreescu and Raonic matches finished nearly simultaneously, as their compatriot Shapovalov was still on court.

As many as 111 schools in Pasir Gudang, in the southern Johor state of Malaysia, have been closed until further notice following the orders of Education Minister Maszlee Malik on March 13.

On 11 March, a second wave of methane poisoning took place a few hours after the two schools reopened.

Speaking to reporters after visiting victims of the pollution in Sultan Ismail Hospital, he stressed that the current level does not warrant declaring a state of emergency or evacuating people from Pasir Gudang.

"Those who are on duty to control and safeguard the situation also need to be prepared for any eventuality", he said, adding that the people should have faith in the government in handling the situation.
