New Zealand Shooting: Man, 28, Appears In Court After Mosque Attacks

What New Zealand the U.S. Norway and Canada Have in Common After the Christchurch Attack

At least 49 people were killed at two mosques full of worshipers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Police in New Zealand said there were "multiple fatalities" following shootings at two mosques in Christchurch and said they had one suspect in custody.

"I can tell you one thing right now: our gun laws will change", said Ardern. Forty-one people were killed at one mosque, and seven people were killed at the second mosque.

CNN cites a 2015 study that reported New Zealand had an adjusted rate of about 1 gun death per 100,000 people, while in 2017, the United States has an adjusted rate of 12 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

The suspect appeared before a closed session at the city's district court on Saturday morning local time, the day after the massacre, which also injured 42, including a four-year-old child.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg called Friday for the global community to combat all forms of extremism after the Christchurch attacks, which revived painful memories of the 2011 Breivik mass killing in Norway.
