Apple responds to Spotify complaints over App store

Apple chief executive Tim Cook

Spotify's main argument was that Apple's own music service, Apple Music, isn't subject to the same restrictions of its own app. CEO Daniel Ek said that Apps should compete fairly on the merits, and not based on who owns the App Store.

It's a little freaky to see Apple respond to Spotify by way of a public press release, but regardless, Apple's statement doesn't really leave much hope for an amicable resolution to Spotify's complaint.

Apple has torn into Spotify in a response to the music streaming service's European Union antitrust complaint.

The iPhone maker said the App Store contributed to Spotify becoming the business it is today, a public company that generates over a billion dollars of revenue per quarter, according to a statement on Friday. Apple says that it has cleared almost 200 Spotify app updates which resulted in over 300 million downloads. We share critical software development tools to support Spotify's app building.

"At its core, the App Store is a safe, secure platform where users can have faith in the apps they discover and the transactions they make".

Apple's statement mostly glosses over this point and instead criticises the streaming service for attempting to appeal a pay rise for songwriters.

Apple has replied to claims by Spotify that App store policies gave it an "unfair advantage".

Its statement added that Apple has "reached out" to Spotify about support for its Siri and AirPlay 2 features "on several occasions", and that Spotify has "told us they're working on it, and we stand ready to help them where we can".

In response, Apple took the rare step of launching a scathing rebuttal to Spotify's allegations.

While Apple charges 30 percent digital revenue in the first year, it's 15 percent after that, it said, noting that Spotify has a double-standard about revenue-sharing.

The company expressed surprise about Spotify's Watch app claim, saying "we reviewed and approved it with the same process and speed with which we would any other app".

Regarding Apple's 30% tax that it levies on paid apps, which is the crux of Spotify's complaint as Apple Music is not subject to it, Apple says Spotify left out a few key pieces of info in its complaint. The company also points out that Spotify's Watch app is now the number one app in the Watch Music category.

"The majority of customers use their free, ad-supported product, which makes no contribution to the App Store", Apple said. "Spotify is asking to keep all those benefits while also retaining 100 percent of the revenue", continued Apple.

Spotify sued music creators after a decision by the US Copyright Royalty Board required Spotify to increase its royalty payments.

"Even now, only a tiny fraction of their subscriptions fall under Apple's revenue-sharing model", it wrote. A similar antitrust case about potential overreach in Apple's walled garden-Apple v.

"We think that's wrong", it said.

Apple also slammed Spotify for aiming to "make more money off others' work", including that of "artists, musicians and songwriters".
