Woman Adds 9 Trillion Digits to Pi

Google Employee Breaks World Record Calculating 31.4 Trillion Pi Digits

She said the calculation took about 121 days to complete - with zero breaks, otherwise it would have been disrupted.

Iwao - a cloud developer advocate who has been working at Google for over three years - successfully calculated pi to 31 trillion digits, beating the previous record by 9 trillion.

Celebrating Pi Day, Google employee Emma Haruka Iwao used cloud computing service to calculate pi to the greatest number of digits.

Iwao and a Google team computed Pi to 31.4 trillion decimal places or Pi multiplied by 10 to the 13th power, ousting the previous record set in 2016 of 22.4 trillion digits.

Pi has been computed to 31.4 trillion decimal places or 31,415,926,535,897 digits to be exact, using Google Compute Engine, powered by Google Cloud.

Iwao said she has been fascinated with pi since she was 12, writes Google. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number and it continues infinitely without repetition or pattern.

With this feat, Emma became the third woman to enter the Guinness World Record for calculating Pi up to large numbers.

Ontario to ban cellphones from classrooms for non-educational purposes
These improvements were mostly demonstrated among the students who were typically "low achieving". In 2017, a Toronto middle school implemented a ban on the use of cellphones in classrooms.

Pi, for people who've been out of school for long enough to forget, is the number given when you divide a circle's circumference (length around the outside) by its diameter (length across the middle).

Google Cloud is the world champion for Pi calculation, announced today, Pi Day, aka March 14th, or 3.14 2019.

As you would expect that amount of digits requires a lot of storage - she calculates she required 170 terabytes to finish the calculation.

This calculation was made thanks to the Pi-benchmark program developed by Alexander J. Yee, called y-cruncher.

'I was very fortunate that there were Japanese world record holders that I could relate to myself.

Google have said that it is not just a significant milestone for their "Google Cloud infrastructure but for mathematical computing overall". "Hopefully we can do an even bigger computation in the future".
